Your Ultimate Guide to Black Friday and Cyber Monday!

What even is Black Friday & Cyber Monday?

If you haven’t heard of these shopping days, you've been missing out! While they originated over in America as shopping holidays after Thanksgiving, they also mark the beginning of the Christmas shopping season and the rest of the world has quickly jumped onto the craze!

On Black Friday you can expect to get some of the best deals of the year both online and in stores, but careful shopping is still advised.

Cyber Monday is an online-only shopping day that's quickly growing in popularity too. Generally, these sales offer you a great opportunity to update your homeware, furniture and appliances while making a start on your Christmas present shopping.

Where can I find the best deals?

Many stores and online retailers will be offering Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, so make sure you shop around at your local retailers to find the best deals out. But remember the price is only part of the deal; don't forget about service, supply and after-sales support. Get this wrong and what seemed like the best deal in town can quickly become the worst.

A few tips to help you get a genuinely good deal:

  • Set your budget first. Decide what you want to spend before the sales start, so the deals work for you.

  • Check the price history. A price comparison site can show whether a sale price is really lower than usual.

  • Compare a few stores. The same item can be on sale for different prices in different places.

  • Check returns and warranties. Sale items still come with your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act, but change-of-mind returns are up to each store.

  • Stick to your list. Knowing what you're after makes it easier to grab the deals you actually want.

Ways to pay for your Black Friday buys

There's more than one way to pay, and the right one depends on what you're buying and how you'd like to pay for it:

  • Savings or cash: no interest or fees to think about.

  • Buy now pay later: handy for smaller buys you can pay off over a few weeks, interest-free if you pay on time. Most people do: Centrix data reported by RNZ found 97% of New Zealand BNPL transactions over Black Friday and Cyber Monday were paid off on or before their due dates.

  • Credit card: works well if you can clear the balance before interest kicks in.

  • Personal loan: good for bigger purchases you'd rather spread out, with a fixed rate and regular repayments, so you know exactly what you're paying and when.
